This lakeside city in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, Vernon sits on the shores of Okanagan Lake with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants and scenic views across the water to the surrounding mountains. The city takes its name from Forbes George Vernon, a 19th-century MLA who helped establish the nearby Coldstream Ranch, and was incorporated in 1892. Orchards thrive in the area's warm summers, and beaches along the lake add to the outdoor draw.
