The southern terminus of Chile's Carretera Austral highway, Villa O'Higgins is a small hamlet in Chilean Patagonia sitting where the Mayer River meets Lake O'Higgins, near the Argentine border. Founded in 1966 and named after independence hero Bernardo O'Higgins, it serves as the gateway to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, with local operators offering boat excursions, fishing, horse riding, and hiking into the surrounding wilderness.
