Vysoké Mýto's central square — nearly square in shape and covering close to two hectares — is among the largest of its kind in Bohemia, laid out when the town was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II in the mid-13th century as a trading hub on the main route between Bohemia and Moravia. The well-preserved historic core, named Historical Town of the Year in 2022, retains a 16th-century bell tower, a Renaissance cemetery church, two medieval gates, and sections of the original town walls.
