Yonezawa beef, carp, and locally grown apples have made this castle city in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, a destination for food-focused visitors. Once the seat of the Uesugi clan and their domain, the city retains its identity as a historic castle town, with the daimyō Uesugi Yozan among its most celebrated former rulers. Mountain scenery frames the surrounding area, and the city was among the first in Japan to receive municipal status, in 1889.
