Seafood, beaches, and working fishing ports define this island city on the southeast coast of Zhejiang Province, where the surrounding sea accounts for the great majority of the city's total area. Yuhuan sits within Taizhou's administrative area, facing the East China Sea to the east and separated from Wenzhou to the south by open water. The city's name, meaning something like "jade ring," derives from an old description of morning mist encircling the island.
