Zabid has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, recognised for its historic architecture, local and military engineering, and urban layout — though it was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2000. One of Yemen's oldest towns, it served as the country's capital from the 13th to the 15th century and held influence across the Arab and Islamic world through its Islamic university. The town sits on Yemen's western coastal plain, near the Red Sea coast.
