Zacatecas

Founded as a Spanish silver-mining camp in 1546, Zacatecas grew so wealthy that it was considered the second most important city in New Spain — and its colonial centre, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, preserves that legacy in Baroque stone that shifts from pale pink to burnt orange depending on the light. The city sits in mountain terrain with a walkable historic core dense with cafés, museums, and landmarks including the Cathedral of Zacatecas and the Cerro de la Bufa viewpoint. The Battle of Zacatecas in 1914, when Francisco Villa's forces captured the city in a single day, is still commemorated annually.
