Aalten
Netherlands
A town in the eastern Netherlands near the German border, Aalten is known for an extraordinary act of collective resistance during World War II: according to its War and Resistance Museum, the town sheltered more people in hiding than any other village in the country during the occupation. The compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants. Notable former residents include AC/DC guitarist Angus Young and professional cyclist Robert Gesink.
