Altamura
Bari · Italy
Altamura, a town on the Murge plateau in Apulia, is best known for Pane di Altamura, a bread of particular local quality sold across Italy. Its compact historic centre is thick with churches and listed buildings, with cafés and restaurants concentrated within walking distance of one another. The 1993 discovery of the Altamura Man — a calcified human skeleton around 130,000 years old — in the nearby limestone cave of Lamalunga adds a further draw for visitors to the wider area.
