Altdorf, the cantonal capital of Uri in the Swiss Alps, is best known as the setting of the William Tell legend — the compact town where Tell is said to have shot an apple from his son's head. It sits on the Reuss river at the junction of two major Alpine passes, the Saint Gotthard and the Klausen, and is the last stop on the Gotthard railway before the world's longest railway tunnel. Cafés and restaurants are well represented for a town its size.
