Amatepec
Amatepec · Mexico
Silver was discovered here in 1531, drawing Spanish miners to this mountain town in Mexico State and establishing what became known as the "Provincia de la Plata" alongside neighbouring Sultepec. The name Amatepec comes from the Nahuatl for "hill of the Amate tree," and the area was home to Matlatzinca and Chontal peoples before colonial settlement. Today it is a small municipal seat in highland terrain, with water accessible a short drive away.
