Wood-carving is the defining craft tradition of Apaseo el Alto, a town in Guanajuato, Mexico, where related cultural events draw visitors each year. The town also holds a national distinction as Mexico's leading producer of pomegranates. Its Otomí name, Atlayahualco, meaning "place of where water flows," reflects a landscape close to water and within reach of mountains, with UNESCO World Heritage sites found across the wider Guanajuato region.
