A large Mexican city whose historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, Querétaro is dense with colonial churches and a well-developed café and restaurant scene, making it one of the more photogenic and walkable city centres in central Mexico. The city also carries substantial historical weight: the 1810 independence conspiracy was plotted here, Emperor Maximilian was captured and executed here in 1867, and the still-current Mexican constitution was drafted here in 1917.
