Ariel is a hilltop city in the heart of the Samaria region of the West Bank, founded in 1978 and granted city status in 1998. Built along a ridge at elevation, it is sometimes called the "capital of Samaria" and is home to Ariel University. The wider region holds UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city's population is predominantly secular.
