The modern commercial heart of Jerusalem, West Jerusalem developed from the late 19th century onward as the city's population outgrew the Old City, and expanded significantly after Israeli independence in 1948. Set in mountain terrain, the area offers a dense café and restaurant scene alongside historic churches, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding hills. Its political status remains internationally contested, with recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Jerusalem more widely accepted than over the city as a whole.
