A neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, Bangu holds the city's all-time heat record — 43.3 °C recorded in January 1984 — and is known as the hottest and most inland district of the capital. The Fazenda Bangu dates to 1673, and a textile factory founded in 1893 on the same site now houses the Bangu Shopping centre. Unidos de Bangu, one of the oldest samba schools in Brazil, twice won the Carioca Carnival Group A title, in 1957 and 1962.
