Petrópolis
Petrópolis · Brazil
Founded as a summer retreat for Emperor Pedro II and Brazil's 19th-century aristocracy, Petrópolis is a mountain city in Rio de Janeiro state whose centre holds a walkable mix of cafés, restaurants, and historic palaces. The former Imperial Summer Palace is now a museum of Imperial history, and Pedro II himself is entombed at the Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcantara. The city briefly served as the state capital between 1894 and 1902 and is set among the forested hills of the Serra dos Órgãos.
