Founded in 1715 in the mountains of Honduras's Ocotepeque department, Belén Gualcho is a compact village whose name translates from Lenca as "Place of many waters." Its colonial Church of La Trinidad and a weekly Sunday market — where Lenca people gather to trade and buy supplies — are the main draws. The village's name in Nahuatl, meaning "House of the oaks," reflects the layered indigenous heritage of the area.
