This small town in the Creuse department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Bourganeuf owes its medieval origins to the Knights Hospitaller, who made it the seat of their "langue d'Auvergne" — a jurisdiction stretching across central France — from the 12th century until 1750. In 1886 it became one of the first towns in France to use hydroelectric power, a distinction tied to its position on the water. The surrounding landscape includes views toward the mountains of the Massif Central.
