A little town in the Creuse department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, La Souterraine preserves several traces of its medieval fortifications, including the 13th- and 15th-century Porte Saint-Jean, a gateway decorated with corbelled turrets, battlements, and machicolations. Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, the town has a small central core with cafés and restaurants, and holds a Village étape designation — a French label for towns that serve travellers well — awarded in 2000.
