Bristol
Sullivan County · United States
Recognized by the U.S. Congress in 1998 as the "Birthplace of Country Music," Bristol, Tennessee shares its famous State Street border with Bristol, Virginia, the two forming a twin city straddling the state line. The earliest commercial recordings of country music were made here, launching Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum sits just across the line in the Virginia half. Bristol Motor Speedway, a major NASCAR short track, adds a second draw to this Tri-Cities town, which also claims Tennessee Ernie Ford as a native son.
