Elizabethton
Carter County · United States
Elizabethton, the county seat of Carter County in Tennessee's mountain terrain, carries an outsized place in early American history: it was the site of the Watauga Association, formed in 1772 as the first independent American government west of the Eastern Continental Divide and the original Thirteen Colonies. The town also hosted the Transylvania Purchase of 1775 and served as a muster point for Revolutionary War battles at Musgrove Mill and Kings Mountain in 1780, set along the water with a compact central core of cafés and restaurants.
