Known as Bolivia's petroleum capital, Camiri is a Chaco town in Santa Cruz Department on the banks of the Parapeti River, with the Aguarague mountain range rising to the west. The surrounding Chaco ecosystem supports subtropical dry forests and a diversity of wildlife. The town sits at the centre of Bolivia's natural gas industry, a status that shaped a significant 2007 pipeline protest here over the nationalization of energy resources.
