Casale Monferrato
Alessandria · Italy
Sitting on the right bank of the Po in Piedmont's deep wine country, Casale Monferrato is a walkable town with a centre full of cafés and churches. Once the capital of the House of Palaiologos in the 15th and early 16th centuries, it later passed to the Gonzagas, who built one of Europe's largest citadels here in the 16th century. The town also carries a complex industrial history, including a major asbestos-related environmental scandal that drew international attention.
