Vigevano's Renaissance Piazza Ducale anchors a heritage-dense, walkable centre in Lombardy's Pavia province, with historic churches, cafés, and listed buildings concentrated within easy reach of one another. The town earned the title "capital of the shoe" after the first industrial-scale shoemaking factory opened here in 1866, and the Castello Sforzesco now houses an international footwear museum tracing that history. The wider region sits near several UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Vigevano itself received its formal city title from Duke Francis II Sforza in 1532.
