Founded in 1550 by Pedro de Valdivia and Chile's capital between 1565 and 1573, Concepción is the country's second city by urban area, with a dense café, restaurant, and bar scene that sustains an active nightlife. The Chilean Declaration of Independence was proclaimed at its Plaza de la Independencia, and the centre holds historic churches, murals, parks, and lakes alongside cultural venues including the Teatro Biobío and the Casa del Arte. A major university city, it anchors the most heavily industrialised region in Chile.
