Founded by Pedro de Valdivia on February 12, 1550, Penco is the third oldest city in Chile, predating the modern city of Concepción whose inhabitants still carry the demonym penquistas in reference to this original settlement. The town sits on the Bay of Concepción with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants along the waterfront, and mountains close by inland. Since 2016 it has also been the site of a rare-earth mining project by Aclara Resources.
