Covarrubias

Known as "the cradle of Castile," this compact village on the Arlanza river in Burgos province was made a capital of the region by the 10th-century Count Fernán González, whose pre-11th-century tower fortress still stands — the only surviving Castilian fortification of its era. The village's well-preserved medieval streetscape earned it national conservation status in 1965. The Arlanza is used for swimming and canoeing, vineyards of the Arlanza DO grow nearby, and the village has a small but real café and restaurant scene for its size.
