Founded in 1719 during a gold rush on the banks of the Cuiabá River, this large Brazilian city is the capital of Mato Grosso and a gateway to the Pantanal wetlands. Its walkable centre holds historic churches, cafés, and restaurants, and the city's culture reflects a mix of European, African, and indigenous influences expressed through cuisine, music, dance, and craftwork. Cuiabá hosted matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and is home to the Arena Pantanal stadium.
