Samalut sits on the west bank of the Nile in Egypt's Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya, with the river a defining feature of the town. Its name derives from a Nubian term meaning "shallow waters," given by sailors navigating the area during Nile floods. The city traces its recorded history to at least a 5th-century Coptic funerary inscription, and local tradition holds that the Virgin Mary stayed here during her time in Egypt. The surrounding markaz is an agricultural centre known for grain, grapes, and cotton.
