From the 14th to the 18th century, Fosdinovo served as the capital of an independent marquisate ruled by the Malaspina family, whose imperial standing was such that the Holy Roman Empire granted the town the right to mint its own coins in 1666. That history is still visible in the local architecture and culture of this compact Tuscan village in the Lunigiana region, set in mountain country with vineyards nearby and a handful of cafés and restaurants for its size.
