Jepara, a coastal city in Central Java near Mount Muria, is known across Indonesia for its Javanese teak wood carving tradition and furniture industry, and as the birthplace of Kartini, a pioneering figure in Indonesian women's rights. Sitting on the north coast of Java, it also serves as a departure point for ferries to the Karimunjawa islands.
