Juliaca
Peru
High-altitude commercial city on Peru's Altiplano, Juliaca serves as the main trade and financial hub of the Puno region, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. Known historically as "Sock City" for its alpaca wool textile production — now an industrial-scale operation — it also hosts the annual Carnaval Juliaca between February and March, when dancers in colourful costumes fill the streets with traditional Collao Plateau dances. The city sits close to Lake Titicaca and the pre-Columbian funerary towers of Sillustani, and has its own international airport.
