Birthplace of the Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev, Kalofer is a compact town in central Bulgaria sitting on the Tundzha river between the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora. It emerged as a settlement in the 16th century and developed during the Ottoman period as a cord-production centre. The Kalofer monastery has been in operation since 1640 and the convent since 1700, and the town was a hub of revolutionary activity during the Bulgarian National Revival.
