Kapfenberg
Austria
This steel town on the Mürz River in Styria, Kapfenberg has been shaped by iron and steel production since the 15th century, when proximity to the Styrian Erzberg and local waterpower drew the first hammer mills. The Böhler brothers' acquisition of the steelworks in 1894 cemented its industrial identity, and Voestalpine BÖHLER Edelstahl still operates a major special-steel plant here. Above the town, the medieval Oberkapfenberg Castle — documented in 1173 — hosts one of Austria's largest medieval festivals annually.
