Karviná is a city in Czech Silesia, on the Olza River at the Polish border, with a well-preserved historic centre in the Fryštát district — a former Silesian princely residence with a castle associated with a branch of the Piast dynasty. Hard coal was mined here from the mid-18th century until 2021, shaping the city's development across nearly three centuries. The Fryštát quarter is protected as an urban monument zone and sits alongside a spa tradition and a university presence.
