Kazimierz Dolny
Poland
Photogenic little town on the Vistula river in eastern Poland, Kazimierz Dolny owes its Renaissance streetscape to a grain-trade boom in the 16th and early 17th centuries — and its preservation to the economic stagnation that followed. Designated one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments in 1994, it has drawn artists since the 19th century; galleries selling fine art, folk art, and sculpture line almost every street. The town also has a marina, scenic viewpoints in the surrounding hills, and a café and restaurant scene well above what its size would suggest.
