Korneuburg
Austria
This heritage-dense tiny town on the Danube a short distance northwest of Vienna, Korneuburg pairs a colourful main square — dominated by a neo-Gothic town hall incorporating a watchtower built around 1455 — with a real café and restaurant scene. The chain ferry that crosses to the Augustinian abbey town of Klosterneuburg opposite is propelled by the river's own current. The former Danube Steamboat Company shipyard, open since 1993 as a branch of Vienna's Museum of Military History, adds an industrial layer to the town's medieval core.
