Krusevo
North Macedonia
The highest town in North Macedonia and one of the highest in the Balkans, Kruševo sits in mountain terrain in the country's west and carries an outsized place in Macedonian history: in 1903 it was the centre of the Ilinden Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, which produced a republic lasting just ten days but regarded as the forerunner of the modern Macedonian state. The national holiday Ilinden is celebrated here every 2nd of August, and the futurist monument Makedonium stands above the town. Kruševo also preserves a largely intact collection of traditional architecture, reflects its history as a centre of the Vlach (Aromanian) minority, and operates a ski lift in winter.
