Nakhon Pathom
Thailand
Dominated by Phra Pathommachedi, claimed to be the world's tallest stupa, Nakhon Pathom is a city in central Thailand roughly an hour west of Bangkok. One of the largest centres of the ancient Dvaravati kingdom — with 7th-century inscriptions found beneath its sanctuaries — it also holds Thailand's only Bhikkhuni temple, open to women from abroad, and a campus of Silpakorn University set within the former Sanam Chandra Palace. The walkable centre has a solid café and restaurant scene.
