Húsavík, on the shores of Skjálfandi Bay in northeast Iceland, is regarded as the whale watching capital of Iceland, with whales sighted on the vast majority of summer trips. The town's most prominent landmark is Húsavíkurkirkja, a wooden church built in 1907. Fishing, trade, and tourism drive the local economy, and the area has a little café and restaurant scene for its size. The settlement has roots going back to 870, when the Swedish Viking Garðar Svavarsson wintered here — one of the earliest recorded stays in Iceland.
