Reykjahlíð
Iceland
Reykjahlíð sits on the shores of Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland, a tiny settlement that serves as the main base for exploring one of the country's most volcanically active landscapes. The lake formed in a massive eruption around 2,300 years ago and is surrounded by geothermal features, including the hot spring area of Hverarönd near Námafjall. Large numbers of birds gather here in summer. Geothermal baths at Jarðbaðshóla in nearby Bjarnarflagi offer another draw, and the area sits at a notably high elevation for an Icelandic settlement.
