This mountain city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Nova Friburgo sits high in the Serra do Mar range roughly a day's drive from the state capital and holds the distinction of being the first town in Brazil settled by Germans — a heritage reflected in its alternative name, Neufreiburg.
