A city on the Argeș River in southern Romania with a walkable centre full of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, Pitești hosts an annual tulip festival — the Simfonia Lalelelor — that has earned it a reputation as the city of tulips. First mentioned in the 14th century, it developed as a trading town in northern Wallachia and later served as the main residence of the Brătianu political family. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the mountains are within easy reach.
