A modest town on the right bank of the Szreniawa river in southern Poland, Proszowice has a layered medieval history: it received its town charter from King Kazimierz Wielki in 1358, served as a seat of regional assemblies from 1496 to 1793, and is the reputed birthplace of Stańczyk, the legendary Polish court jester. Its Gothic parish church, completed in 1454, was considered among the most impressive in Lesser Poland. The town sits a short distance northeast of Kraków, within reach of the wider region's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
