Wieliczka
Poland
The Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, draws well over a million visitors a year to this town in southern Poland's Kraków metropolitan area. Founded in 1290, Wieliczka developed through the medieval period as a salt-extraction centre, and the mine — known in Latin as Magnum Sal — is now a museum. The walkable old town core, listed as a National Polish Monument in 1994, has a solid café and restaurant scene.
