Sakurai
Japan
Ringed by some of Japan's oldest and most venerated shrines and temples, Sakurai is a town in Nara Prefecture with deep roots in ancient Japanese history. The Ōmiwa Shrine at Miwa, considered one of the oldest shrines in Japan, and the Hasedera temple at Hatsuse are both here, alongside the Tanzan Shrine at Tōnomine. The area is thought to have been the heartland of the early Yamato polity, and keyhole-shaped burial mounds from the Kofun period survive across the town.
