Saldaña
Palencia · Spain
This modest town on the banks of the River Carrión in Palencia, Saldaña has a weekly open-air market held each Tuesday in its central plaza, the stone-paved Plaza Vieja, believed to date to the 10th century. The town has Roman-era roots — possibly the "Eldana" recorded by Ptolemy — and the remains of a villa attributed to the emperor Theodosius I. Medieval counts based here appear in the Cantar de Mio Cid and in tales of the semi-legendary Bernardo del Carpio.
