Santillana
Spain
A modest historic town in Cantabria known by the old saying that it is "the town of three lies" — neither a saint, nor flat, nor by the sea, despite what its name suggests. The medieval centre preserves Romanesque architecture including the Colegiata, a former Benedictine monastery housing the remains of Santa Juliana, from whom the town's name actually derives. The Cave of Altamira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is nearby, and walks in the surrounding hills offer views of the Picos de Europa and the Bay of Biscay.
