Skarzysko-Kamienna
Poland
An industrial town in south-central Poland on the Kamienna river, within sight of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Skarżysko-Kamienna has a compact centre with a concentration of cafés and restaurants. Formed in 1923 from a merger of smaller localities, the town has deep industrial roots — iron ore mining and metallurgy here stretch back over 550 years — and has been a munitions production centre since 1922, a history documented in its military equipment museum. During World War II, the site saw the killing of over 19,000 people by Nazi German forces.
